Join the Rockford Historical Society for dinner and learn about Tet Offensive Vietnam. John Kline joined the US Army 21 August 1961.Completing basic training he began Army Security Agency training for radio direction finding. He transferred to Okinawa in October of 1962 then to San Francisco on the troop ship USSN Breckenridge for discharge. After discharge in Okinawa he was unsuccessful as a salesman so John reenlisted into the US Army. Prior to reenlisting he married an Okinawan national, Hiroko Kline. His marriage to a foreign national caused him to lose his Top Secret crypto clearance and was assigned to USATG. He then transferred to the 999th Signal Company. Then he went to Korea in support of a major exercise involving Special Forces A teams. John returned to Okinawa and the 999th signal company late 1966.

Returning to the United States without his wife he reported to A Company of the 57th Signal Battalion in Fort Hood, Texas. Just prior to his discharge date he received orders to go to Vietnam. September of 1967 John reported to the 595th Signal Co. (Spt.) in Di An Vietnam. Early 1968 he traveled to Phu Bai Vietnam and was officially assigned to the 36th Signal Battalion. He was assigned to the 596th Signal Co. (Sup) until his discharge 1 June 1968 at HQ USARYIS on Okinawa.

John and Hiroko Kline have been married for 53 years; they live in Rockford Illinois and have a daughter and a son. John is very active in the local Veterans community.

Rockford Historical Society was formed in 1961 to among other things serve the City of Rockford and its people in the compilation, dissemination, and distribution of local history; in creating a membership of persons interested in local story and the culture of the community.
