Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato announces that a former Rockford Police Officer is one of two individuals facing charges for an armed robbery that happened earlier this month.

On July 22nd, 2018, Rockford Police responded to the Van Galder Bus Station at 7559 Walton Street after a report of, an armed robbery. A woman told police that two individuals wearing dark clothing, approached her, pointed a gun at her and demanded money. Detectives conducted a follow up investigation which was reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. As a result, charges were authorized againstYuliya Kuznets (D.O.B. 3/23/1981) and James B. Akerman (D.O.B. 4/24/1968). Kuznets and Akerman each face two counts of Armed Robbery. Kuznets is a former City of Rockford Police Officer.
Armed Robbery is a Class X Felony. Count 1 is punishable by a sentence of 21-45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by three years of Mandatory Supervised Release. Count 2 is punishable by a sentence of 26-50 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by three years of Mandatory Supervised Release.
Kuznets is currently being held in the Winnebago County Jail on $750,000 bond. She is scheduled to be in court this afternoon at 1:30pm in Courtroom B of the Winnebago County Criminal Justice Center.
Akerman is currently being held in the Winnebago County Jail on $750,000 bond. He is scheduled to be in court this afternoon at 1:30pl in Courtroom B of the Winnebago County Criminal Justice Center.
The charges are merely allegations and the defendants are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
