Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato announces that Dashon Ward (D.O.B. 9/16/1983) was found guilty of Armed Habitual Criminal after a bench trial in front of the Honorable Judge Ronald White.
On January 3rd, 2016, Rockford Police responded to 1115 Chestnut Street in regards to an investigation. During that investigation, a lawful search of the home was conducted and a firearm was located in the basement area. Through interviews it was learned that Dashon Ward brought the gun into the home about a month prior to this investigation. Ward possessed the gun on several occasions including in the early morning hours on January 3rd of 2016. Ward was not able to legally possess a gun based on two prior qualifying convictions. One of those convictions was for violation of the controlled substances act, which is a Class X Felony. The second conviction was for unlawful use of weapon by a felon which is a Class 2 Felony.
Armed Habitual Criminal is a Class X Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 6-30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by three years of Mandatory Supervised Release. Due to this defendant’s prior Class X felony, he is eligible for an extended sentence of 6-60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Ward is scheduled to be sentenced on May 3rd at 1:00pm by the Honorable Judge White in Courtroom 316.
