Press Release- Smallwood Washington Horvath Indictments

Winnebago County State’s Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross announces that three women have been indicted for taking thousands of dollars in merchandise from a Rockford department store.

 

On February 1st, 2019, Rockford Police Officers were dispatched to the Meijer Store, located at 2013 McFarland Road for a possible theft by employees. Loss Prevention Associates discovered that that three women, who were employees of the store, worked together to take merchandise from the business without paying for it. The retail thefts occurred between November of 2018 and January of 2019. The value of the merchandise taken from the business is almost $100,000. The investigation was reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office and as a result, charges were authorized against Lindsey N. Smallwood (D.O.B. 9/17/1991),Helena Washington (D.O.B. 11/29/1956), and Vanessa M. Horvath (D.O.B. 5/21/1989).  All three defendants were recently indicted by a Winnebago County Grand Jury. Smallwood and Washington face one count of Retail Theft. Horvath faces one count of Theft and one count of Retail Theft charges.  

 

            Theft is a Class 2 Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 3-7 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by two years of Mandatory Supervised Release.

            Retail Theft is a Class 3 Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 2-5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by one year of Mandatory Supervised Release.

           

            Washington and Horvath are scheduled to be arraigned at 8:30am on March 7th, 2019, in Courtroom D of the Winnebago County Criminal Justice Center.

            Smallwood is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30pm on March 7th, 2019 in Courtroom D of the Winnebago County Criminal Justice Center.  

 

The charges are merely allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
