We will bring together members of the Tuskegee Airmen, the Montford Point Marines as well as Veterans from the Korean and Vietnam Wars and beyond for two days. These Veterans will sharestories of brave service, patriotism and their unique understanding of what it was like to be an African American serving in the United States Military. This historic gathering with some of the most patriotic Veterans will provide the community a chance to meet and hear firsthand their stories of bravery and sacrifice. We encourage anyone that appreciates the service of our Veterans and enjoys history to attend.

Saturday February 18th 2017-1PM to 4 PM

Our guests will include three original Tuskegee Airmen and Rockford’s own Veterans from The Korean War. This year we will introduce the community to several African-American women that served in the Armed Forces during both days’ events.

Sunday February 19th 2017-1PM to 4 PM

We welcome three original Montford Point Marines along with local Veterans from the Vietnam War to Rockford IL.

Why:In spite of adversity and limited opportunities, African Americans have played a significant role in U.S. military history over the past 300 years. They were denied military leadership roles and skilled training because many believed they lacked qualifications for combat duty. On June 25th 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order No. 8802 establishing the fair employment practice that began to erase discrimination in the Armed Forces. This executive order gave African Americans an opportunity to serve their county as equals. Veterans Memorial Hall is honored to bring these patriotic Veterans to Rockford in celebration of Black History Month.

Doors open at 12 PM with the opening ceremony scheduled for 1:00 PM. The event will conclude at 4PM with an autograph session in our library. The cost is $5.00, students and seniors are free.
