Sheriff’s Office Receives Accreditation with Excellence Award

Date: Friday, January 5, 2018

On Wednesday January 17, 2018 Sheriff Gary Caruana will be formally presented with an Accreditation with Excellence Award by a representative from the Commission on
Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). This presentation will take place during an Illinois Police Accreditation Coalition meeting in Bartlett, Illinois.

The Sheriff’s Office conducted their CALEA on-site assessment in October of 2016. During that process, CALEA assessors visited the Sheriff’s Office to examine all aspects of
the Agency’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. Verification by the team that the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office meets the
Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain and maintain accreditation and international recognition of law enforcement professional excellence. In
March of 2017, Sheriff Caruana attended the CALEA Commission hearing in Mobile, Alabama where the Commission unanimously voted to award the Sheriff’s Office with
Accreditation with Excellence. Although the Sheriff’s Office has been Accredited since 1994, this is the first time that the agency has received the Accreditation with Excellence
Award.

Internationally, less than 1000 public safety agencies possess accreditation status—the Sheriff’s Office is the 295th agency to attain this achievement.
