Winnebago County State’s Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross announces that a Grand Jury has returned an indictment against a Chicago man for selling fictitious tickets to sporting events in the area.

On September 17th, 2019, the South Beloit Police Department received a complaint from a man who reported that he had bought tickets for a Wisconsin Badgers football game through an online website. The victim arranged to meet the seller at a gas station in South Beloit. On September 16th, 2019, the victim met with a male and paid $600 for four tickets to the game.  The victim later called the ticket office and learned that the tickets were fictitious. Detectives conducted a follow up investigation that was reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office. As a result, Rontez K. Newman (DOB: 2/2/1983) was charged and subsequently indicted by a Winnebago County Grand Jury on Forgery charges.

Forgery is a Class 3 Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 2-5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by a year of Mandatory Supervised Release.

Newman is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment at 9:00am on November 1st, 2019, in front of the Honorable Judge Debra Schafer in Courtroom B at the Winnebago County Justice Center.

The charges are merely allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
