State’s Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross
Winnebago County State’s Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross announces that Shelly A. Givens (DOB: 3/6/1976) was sentenced to two years in the Illinois Department of Corrections by the Honorable Judge Philip Nicolosi. The defendant will also be on Mandatory Supervised Release for one year after she is released from prison. Givens pled guilty to one count of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Involving Great Bodily Harm in front of Judge Nicolosi on June 14th, 2019.
On January 12th, 2018, Rockford Police Officers responded to the 1600 Block of Kilburn Avenue in reference to a traffic accident. Upon arrival, Officers observed that there had been a collision between a Chevrolet Suburban and a Subaru Legacy. A passenger in the Subaru was injured, and taken to a Rockford hospital to be treated. During a follow up investigation, Detectives learned that the defendant, Shelly Givens, was driving her Suburban at a high rate of speed and in the wrong lane of traffic on Kilburn, at the time of the collision. Officers at the scene observed that Givens had slurred speech and showed indicators of impairment on Standardized Field Sobriety tests.
Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Great Bodily Harm is a Class 4 Felony that is punishable by a special sentence of either probation or 1-12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by one year of Mandatory Supervised Release. Givens was sentenced to two years in the Department of Corrections which must be served at 85%.
