Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato announces that on October 15th, 2018,Van Richardson (D.O.B. 4/1/1990) was found guilty of First Degree Murder and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm after a jury trial in front of the Honorable Judge Brendan Maher.
On May 24th, 2017, around 9:00pm, Officers from the Rockford Police Department were dispatched to the 3300 Block of Sablewood Drive after reports of gunfire in the area. When Officers arrived, they located a male victim, later identified as Lester Sanders, who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Sanders later died from his injuries. Detectives from the Rockford Police Department Violent Crimes Unit conducted a follow-up investigation that resulted in the arrest of Van Richardson, and another individual.
First Degree Murder is a Class M Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 20-60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by three years of Mandatory Supervised Release. The jury also found that the allegation that the defendant personally discharged a firearm that proximately caused death was proven. The First Degree Murder sentence range is 45 years to Natural Life in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm is a Class 1 Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 4-15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by two years of Mandatory Supervised Release.
Richardson is scheduled to be back in court at 9am on Friday, October 19th, 2018, in front of the Honorable Judge Maher in Courtroom D of the Winnebago County Criminal Justice Center.
