Press Release-Burks Murder Charges

Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato announces charges against a Rockford man for a deadly shooting at Cliffbreakers Resort and Conference Center in January 2017.

 

On January 1st, Rockford Police responded 700 W. Riverside Boulevard for a fight with reports of multiple shots fired. Officers found two victims, one of them, Joshua Jamerson was deceased when police arrived. An autopsy later revealed Jamerson died as a result of a gunshot wound.  Another man, was transported to the hospital from Cliffbreakers and survived.  Two other victims had also been shot and drove themselves to the hospital, and were treated and released for non-life threatening injuries.  Both men told police they’d been shot during a party at the Conference Center.

Sean D. Burks (D.O.B. 1/21/1986)faces 32 counts of First Degree Murder, three counts of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, three counts of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm and one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon.

 

First Degree Murder is a Class M Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 45 years to Natural Life in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by three years of Mandatory Supervised Release. 

Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm is a Class X Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 6-30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by three years of Mandatory Supervised Release.

Aggravated Battery with a Firearm is a Class X Felony that is punishable by a sentence of 6-30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by three years of Mandatory Supervised Release.

Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon is a Class 3 Felony that is punishable by a special sentence of 2-10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by a year of Mandatory Supervised Release.

The charges are merely allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
