State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato
Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato was joined by South Beloit Police Chief Dean Stiegemeier to announce details of a special law enforcement traffic detail that will take place over the 4th of July holiday weekend. The detail is referred to as a No Refusal Weekend”.
Law enforcement agencies will make extra efforts to get impaired drivers off the streets. If a driver is pulled over and suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but they refuse to submit to a breathalyzer, the individual will be automatically transported to the Winnebago County Jail and the State’s Attorney’s Office will seek a search warrant to collect the suspect’s blood. When the suspect gets to the jail, a phlebotomist will collect the sample, it will be tested and kept as evidence. If an individual refuses to submit to a blood test, they could face Obstruction of Justice charges in addition to the Driving Under the Influence charge.
Similar traffic details have been successfully conducted in other jurisdictions like Kane County, Illinois. State’s Attorney Bruscato and Winnebago County Law Enforcement Agencies hope the detail will deter people from driving impaired, so everyone in the community can enjoy a safe holiday weekend.
